Myself as well. However, my experience is that undergrads who are getting there first experience in x86 need their hands held quite a bit. It doesn't help that there are two competing syntaxes for x86 so I have to be careful to make sure all of the resources use the same syntax (I use AT&T so that it compatible with gcc as I said before).

The gas manual is slightly frustrating because they simply say "consult intel" for the opcode and remember to mostly reverse except for most of the floating point instructions. See: https://sourceware.org/binutils/docs/as/i386_002dDependent.h... So I mostly don't point students there because it isn't that helpful when you are just starting out.
