FYI, companies are typically getting alerts/reports of mentions on the web on various subjects of interest to them.
While they may just be focusing on trends/aggregate info, they often sample messages too.
This has been going on for at least 20 years (probably more, I just wasn't aware until then). It's not mainly interns, it's the web crawlers that are constantly indexing the internet.
