I can't have more than 80-90 characters per line: http://baymard.com/blog/line-length-readability So 40% of your viewport has to be either margins or comments.

Perhaps it would look less strange if I swapped the order of the 2 columns?

PS: I increased the margins around there orange line to make it look less cramped.
