It's a little meaningless to acknowledge Obama's straw man opponent, but on a purely tactical level I think it is more effective to seek out maximalist position that includes not just a right to strong encryption but also a scaling back of mass surveillance, as you are advocating here. It is unfortunately too easy for him to paint the pro-encryption side as absolutists when the debate reduces to a binary strong vs weak encryption. It is really disheartening to see him take this position.
