It's breaking EXISTING free trade deals that's angering people. And also using them as geopolitical cudgels against allies. Every country has protectionist measures in various sectors, trade deals are decades-long work to chip away at them in a way that's agreeable to everyone involved.

Liberals and progressives don't agree on most things related to (free) trade, but agree on not "bullying" allies for no reason and little profit.

This is what confuses me most about Trumps tactics. These are longtime friends and allies who would’ve gladly worked together to try to improve any perceived imbalances.

I don't know about all that, but I use Marsaglias for generating noise samples in MCUs like Pico. It's the fastest option there is for such devices.


I agree! For many games (especially the ones running on old devices), xorshifts are pretty good! Not all applications need cryptographically safe generators! And sometimes it's ok to trade complexity for speed!

But I agree that if you're building something new aimed for modern devices, Marsaglia's xorshift128 wouldn't be my first choice! But I'd definitely want it in my RNG library for backward compatibility!


If you are interested in performant retro PRNGs, you can find a link to mine in my profile, if I am not mistaken. The counter is based on xorshift. As of the time of release it passed all tests that could be passed with only a 2^32-1 period.

On Z80 it was only about as fast as RC4 which is also a good option in terms of performance and quality but whereas RC4 has a huge state, this one only has a 32bit state, the rest staying in ROM.

The really intriguing part is the "Custom ADC" here, seems like some kind of 1-bit ΣΔ oversampling ADC (704 MSPS?). Single differential transistor, and captured by FPGAs LVDS RX.

Neat way to reduce cost and pin-count? But I think the typical FPGA clock tree has poor jitter performance. Not using the internal PLL(s) might help with spurs but the clock buffers are unavoidable.

The documentation mentions it's likely further degraded by noise from switching regulators. Oh the joys of hunting RF noise sources.


We've got the switching noise nailed down. Fortunately the LVDS jitter doesn't affect the sigma delta too badly because that impacts proportional to baseband frequency which is largely filtered out by the decimation filters beyond 40 MHz.. With a total of eight ADCs per QuadRF, you can see we are getting huge savings by being custom! While the per-ADC ENOB is 7-8 bits, another nice thing about phased arrays is that the quantization/ADC noise averages away between elements, so with 8 ADCs in QuadRF we pick up another 1.5 bit giving 8.5-9.5 ENOB, which is frankly better than most SDRs. For the bigger phased arrays that improves further quickly.


I like to think of myself as pretty well-versed when it comes to hardware and software and even some RF. But this conversation has me hitting search a lot, lol. It's fascinating reading experts talk about a domain I have less experience in.


Heh, welcome to RF; there are more rabbit holes to go down in domain specialty than I think there are grains of sand on a beach. I've gone down like... two. And I'm pretty overwhelmed.

But this is a really interesting use case as well, and something that could be used for a 16 channel logic analyzer with analog recording support like the Saleae Logic 16 Pro, but without expensive ADC from Analog Devices.


Yeah, jitter doesn't matter too much at low frequency IF. I/Q calibration is more likely to be the bottleneck. That and close-in spurs from the fractional PLLs.

I have very little experience with MIMO / phased-arrays, this application likely doesn't need ultra high SFDR.

Oh wow, the AD936x series was impressive for its I/Q calibration. Still is I guess, because there's been no compelling alternative even a decade later.

As I mostly deal with single channel applications, I get to use double superhet and avoid runtime calibration. Not an option here, Zero-IF has too much in the Pros column for multichannel.


Yes once you have runtime IQ compensation figured out in digital, its essentially free and easily puts your image rejection ratio into the -50 to -60dBc range. I don't have a write up on the RxQEC, but it's rather trivial: you periodically compute the 2x2 IQ correlation matrix, then take the sqrt (e.g., Cholesky) and multiply your incoming Rx samples by that inverse. You can extend that further for widerband by using FIR taps but here the baseband matching is good enough to go with "single tap"


For those confused about what this means, my understanding is this: when quantizing a wave you can use sampling rate to derive missing bits, so using even one bit can work if you do it fast enough, but jitter is a problem because it means the clock doesn't cleanly sync and it doesn't help non-quantization noise like those generated from switching supplies. Corrections welcome.

If I’m in the room with one of my APs, my closest neighbor is a hair under 40 dB lower. But I can see a dozen other networks on my street, which means the other signals are strong enough where my phone can decode the packets.

The point is that wireless networks can use not only the channel dimension, but the spatial dimension. That’s the basis of things like MIMO.

It's the opposite IME, most petrol two-wheelers are massive money sinks past 5 years of ownership. You will likely spend close to original price in maintenance and repairs, with most models developing "unfixable" issues that massively degrade the experience. It doesn't need to be engine related for the costs to add up.

Even if the battery craps out after 5 years (extremely unlikely), it's a wash. That's before considering the fuel savings. Battery degradation is a bit of a meme, we aren't even 10 years into mass adoption of EVs for this to be a common experience.


Never had any problem with any bike, except regular maintenance which is changing oil, changing chain, and changing tires. There aren't physically any parts on a motorcycle which could become a "massive money sink" if it breaks from normal use.

Are you talking about weird vintage bikes or Harley Davidson bikes? Because modern bikes don't have maintenance or factory issues.

Well, what is the explanation then? If there isn't a major drawback with electric motorcycles, they would already have sold hundreds of millions of units.

Because of no gas cost, cheaper/no maintenance, better performance, better riding experience, less noisy. Which commuter wouldn't want an electric motorcycle? Are hundreds of millions of potential customers in India, Asia and South America simply fools who don't have the hacker enlightenment?


The explanation is that the trusted brands (in 2Ws) are just now rolling-out EVs, the market is very conservative and home charging likely isn't an option if one's renting.

The cheaper variants now have enough range to relieve (urban) range anxiety, wasn't the case a year or two ago. My own model that's 4 years old, the new variant now has 2.5x range, faster charging and much better features. All that for the same price, and without any of the subsidies that used to exist.

These things take time, this is a low-margin business that isn't drowning in VC money.


It's a plausible explanation, but I find it a bit difficult to believe. Motorcycle companies are mature and well funded, they're hardly in need of any venture capital at their stage.

As for the motorcycle market being conservative, I rather think that there's a lot of people chomping at the bits to try an electric bike. The motorcycle market is much more diverse and playful than the car market, in my opinion. If electric bikes were even "almost as good" as gas bikes, then I'd expect to see at least some percentage out on the street being electric. Or hear people talking about them.

But I don't see them anywhere, or hear anything about them. And they are easy and affordable to buy here. What I see is tons of gas motorcycles, and a whole lot of electric cars, and electric scooters (those that go on the pavement).

I would expect most ladies who commute on a 125cc scooter to much rather go on an electric motorcycle, just to name a very large customer group.


For the established players, it's the battery supply chain that's the main issue. Rest can be locally-sourced or manufactured. Makes them very nervous, having to import when tariffs and rules change everyday.

I too see Green EV number plates more that I used to before. I live in a Tier 3 city in South India.


Leasing land for solar pays very little. The only reason people do it is because the land has no better use and solar doesn’t permanently damage it the way mining or farming could. Other industries aren’t being priced out.


Those are examples where they shouldn't be using public cloud in the first place. Should build those services to be local-first.

Using a different, smaller cloud provider doesn't improve reliability (likely makes it worse) if the architecture itself wrong.

Talking more about some unrelated function taking down the whole system, not advocating for "offline" credit card transactions (is this even a thing these days?). Ex: If the transaction needs to be logged somewhere, it can be built to sync whenever possible rather than blocking all transactions if the central service is down.
