Can we please make it so that AI CEOs are smart enough not to optimize everything according to the focus group that is their shareholders? Seems like we could solve the enshittification problem with this if we play our cards right.

Unless humanity can figure out a way to make a binding international agreement to pace development, it doesn't seem practical to expect US frontier labs to do it.

It's fairly obvious that the frontier labs are proposing that only "paced" providers would have access to the US market - and by extension the G7 market. They don't mind splitting market share between the three of them, they do mind open models destroying the "frontier lab" operating model.

Even if all GCR models were banned, anyone with access to 20k-1MM GPUs can throw their hat in the ring to make a new frontier open model.

But that doesn’t matter a lot when some nation state is using their own AI to hack US assets, right? How, exactly, would a lockdown or slowdown prevent that?

If history has shown one thing it’s that China often capitalizes very well on these types of measures.

Regarding automatic formalization of proofs using AI, how do we know the formalization doesn't contain errors?

In a similar vein, where does the theorem statement even reside, just so we can take a look at how large that is? Is it the four files with "Theorem" (and no "Comparator") in the file name? ("R3/Theorem.lean", "LocalPaperTheorem.lean", "PeriodiocPaperTheorem.lean", and "WholeDomainPhysicalStageTheorem.lean").

It depends on what you mean by that. In general we hope that the environment and theorum statements are correct. If they are, we know that the formal proof proves the theorum we want. If your asking how we know that the formal proof actually matches the informal proof, we do not.

Isn't it also a simple idea that a model designed to recall relevant information from its training data, which is also known to have been trained on data from user transcripts, would, in fact, reproduce directly relevant work by leading experts in the field? Seems like Occam's razor would apply to that situation as well.

We know that LLMs are trained to recall relevant info. We know AI vendors are using user transcripts to train models. Two plus two equals four, right? I mean, an LLM that failed to recall the transcripts of those researchers would be a bad model.

Honestly this whole thing is so fucking weird. I feel like there's an argument that absolutely no one involved in the final crossing of the finish line to the proof actually did any work (other than just intelligently directing an LLM) and deserves any credit. As the author of this doc mentions, the mathematicians who did the actual work that led to the formulation of this approach (without the use of LLMs; just good ole' fashioned human intellect) are the ones who deserve the credit.

Imagine that a no name janitor used their time in the evenings to go spelunking through the literature to push an LLM to this result. No one would care because that person isn't an anointed expert. So why would the expert deserve any more credit? Because they sort of understand the result, even if they couldn't have achieved it on their own? The whole issue of credit for AI-assisted discoveries seems like it's going to run into a brick wall pretty soon.

I agree for most of the people in the story except Buckmaster himself seems to have been supplying real ideas.

Sounds like the plot for Good Will Hunting 2.

Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season is taken.

It’ll have to be Good Will Hunting 3.

The Hunting for More Money

Token Bill Hunting

Yup! I wanted to side with the mathematician on this one but I read the statement only to discover that they were also pushing an llm on someone else’s idea producing mountains of slop.

Have LLMs actually improved anything? Is mathematics better off than if these slop proofs didn’t exist? Who or what is actually benefiting here.

And then he wanted New Mexico to be New America. Capitulation is not just about what they're asking for now, but also what they'll be emboldened to ask for in the future.

Corruption in the US Census Bureau? No fuckin' way!

Census bureau works pretty hard to get as accurate a count as possible, and hires mathematicians specifically to work on privacy. This is about the administration trying to put its finger on the pans

The article doesn't address what I think are the main complaints about H-1B: that it is mostly used to cut costs and hire people who have very little freedom to switch jobs. That and all the trickery with ghost jobs meant to only give the appearance of hiring stateside. The example given is also not great. Von Braun was one remarkable foreign expert in a leadership position. On the other hand, in my experience, many H-1B hires tend to occupy low-level jobs; ironically the very ones that the author says will be filled by motivated Americans. I mean...just try working at any American FAANG. The evidence is totally in your face.

> The article doesn't address what I think are the main complaints

Over the last 20 years, I've noticed this is most of political journalism today.

Post a headline refuting the thing, ignore the primary issue from the thing you're refuting. People who don't already deeply understand the issue don't know any better.

Everything can be factually correct. It's all just framing by what you choose to leave out / ignore.

That is the real reason. Immigrants are cheap and will work hard maybe at the cost of quality. Companies will to hire cheap or will outsource to cheaper countries. I think every generation had cheap foreign labor coming to America which fueled the growth. Right now it is H1b labor.

In a way, it's nice that Trump is giving such a good, practical demonstration of why being a bully never works out the way you think it will. A good education for those who need it. Just sucks that we all have to pay for it out of pocket.

The voting public is not the same as the general public.

This is not an excuse for anything. A democracy doesn’t come for free, but requires active participation from everyone.

Maybe that general public should move their asses then. Trump and his family is ransacking the US. It would be funny if it wasn’t tragic.

If they don’t vote they are ok with the status quo

No. There are many reasons to not vote.

You are informed, and realize that the Gerrymandering of your district is such that your vote for representatives, literally, will not count. Your state is reliably Red or Blue, so your presidential vote, literally, will not count-- due to the Electoral College.

You are informed, and realize that a vote for either of the major party candidates, for national office, is a vote for the status quo of Imperialism, Genocide and the further gutting of the working class to transfer wealth to the already rich. E.g., Harris and Trump were both complicit in genocide. And, Harris, seeking approval of Israel and their agents in the US like AIPAC, the Ellisons, etc., stated that Iran is the greatest adversary of the U.S. There is a non-zero probability we would be fighting Israel's war on Iran even if Harris had won. Democrat Biden still has a higher death toll of murdered children and babies from enabling Israel's genocide of the indigenous Palestinians than Republican Trump, but the number of Palestinian children who's murders were enabled by Trump, is still rising.

You are informed and know that the two major parties conspired to eliminate any third-parties or independents from being able to participate in presidential debates, so, (along with oligarch control of media and campaign financing) a faithful D/R servant of the oligarchs / Israel will, likely, always end up the winner.

You are informed and know that during a multi-year Princeton/Northwestern University study, not a single piece of legislation was passed by congress that was popular with the population, that did not also have support of a wealthy entity too. And, in every case, legislation which the population opposed, but was supported by the rich/powerful was passed. I.e., congress critters are faithful servants to their masters who dole out the campaign funding-- oligarchs, corporations and Israel. The US, at the federal level, is an oligarchy but still goes through the ritual of voting to pacify the uninformed.

You were disenfranchised due to a conviction of a crime you may or may not have committed (many people in the US plead guilty to crimes they did not commit when offered a lighter [often still multi-year] sentence for pleading guilty vs. the threat of a very long sentence / death penalty, if they lose their case in court).

You were disenfranchised due to gerrymandering (redundant to a point above, but puts a finer point on the issue).

Your vote was suppressed by the closing of polling places in your low income area, so a massive number of people must share a single, inconvenient, polling location with a multi-block line. Compare to the wealthy area with multiple polling stations within a few blocks of each other.

(Per Trump's statements), In upcoming elections, heavily armed and masked Brown Shirts ^H^H^H ICE agents will be stationed at the entrance to polling places to intimidate people with too much melanin into not showing up and voting-- and, harass those who do.

...

I still vote for the local elections, but the outcomes of federal and state offices are effectively predetermined in my district/state. So, my 3rd party / independent votes don't even register with the controlling major party as a protest vote-- they don't need to care that I am dissatisfied with their rule, and they don't.

And then there is that one reason to vote anyway: things can always get worse if you don't.
